Abstract

Pleas for closer ties between industry and universities are not enough, says Professor Roland Smith, who is both a practising academic and an industrialist. Here, he puts forward a string of proposals — many of which are bound to cause controversy — for breaking down the barrier. He calls for efficiency checks on universities and polytechnics, the diversion of cash and resources from arts and social sciences to technology and science and an increase in fees for overseas students to help combat inflation.
