New journal title, same journal mission

Article Type: Editorial From: European Journal of Training and Development, Volume 36, Issue 1

This issue marks a new phase in the development of JEIT. As you can see, the journal has a new title, European Journal of Training and Development (EJTD). This does not represent a dramatic change of title and therefore it is a story of continuity rather than discontinuity. For almost five years the editorial team (Dr Ronan Carbery, Dr David McGuire, our regional editors Professor Frank Horwitz, Professor Roland Yeo and Professor Fredrick Nafukho, and our managing editor Nancy Rolph) and I have worked to consolidate the mission of the journal and to reflect the changes taking place within the field of training and development. The word “industrial” in the title no longer represents the type of work published in the journal. We increasingly publish papers that research training and development issues in a variety of sectors and address research questions that are not related to industrial issues. Our title change is designed to send a strong signal that we are a multi-disciplinary journal that publishes research on individual, organisational, national, sectoral, international and global training and development issues.

To our minds, the core mission of the journal stays the same. It remains our focus to advance the academic discipline of training and development from theoretical, policy and practice perspectives. What makes the journal unique is its focus on publishing research that advances the theoretical development of the field, but also considers policy and practice issues in institutions and organisations. We include the word “European” in the title to help differentiate it from others in the field and to encourage papers that provide a regional perspective on training and development. The words “training” and “development” are also included in the title. Both of these areas are closely related and have evolved in a similar way. We continue to include the word “HRD” as part of our sub-title given that we view this strand of research policy and practice to be an integral part of the discipline of training and development.

The editorial team will continue to work to further enhance the quality of the journal, including its citation rates, its reputation within the field and its overall ranking. We note from the recently published ABS list of quality journals that JEIT performed well on its citation within quality journals in similar and related fields. Our coverage in terms of geography and research topics has broadened significantly. In 2010-2011 we published work from authors in thirty one countries. Our journal downloads have also increased significantly across the globe since 2007.

EJTD as an international journal will continue to dedicate itself to understanding and enhancing the research and practice base of training and development. We therefore welcome contributions that look in depth at training and development, from a theoretical perspective and or focus on policy and practice issues. We are also interested in papers that make use of novel theoretical approaches to understand training and development at multiple levels of analysis. We will continue to accept a variety of submissions, those that report original research, those that investigate policy and practice issues, theoretical reviews of training and development and perspectives on practice.
