Six colleges in north-east England have formed a consortium which has secured more than £1 million of extra money for further-education projects in the area. G6 brings together City of Sunderland College, Gateshead College, Newcastle College, North Tyneside College, South Tyneside College and Tynemouth College in what is believed to be the largest formal education partnership in Britain. City of Sunderland College principal Ian Todd, who chairs G6, said: "Traditionally, further-education colleges have been in competition, but we can achieve so much more for our students, staff and local employers by working together. The additional funding we have already secured through such co-operation proves the point. Our main priority is to raise the region's profile on important education issues and help to ensure than Tyne and Wear secures the necessary resources to provide the best possible education services for its people.

"By establishing links with key figures in education, business and Government, we will promote the region as a centre of educational excellence and demonstrate the key role that further education plays in creating a well-equipped, skilled workforce that contributes to the local economy."

The additional funding secured by G6 has been invested in new facilities. They include specialist engineering equipment at North Tyneside College, a community learning centre in Whitley Bay High Street, and support for a project to examine workforce-supply issues in four key employment areas.
