Launch of the construction round table (CRT): agenda for change

The members of the construction round table (CRT) who spend £6 billion a year on construction in the UK recently announced their commitment to improving the construction and performance of their facilities with the launch of the Agenda for Change, a statement of their goals and the means of achieving them.

The Agenda for Change emphasizes the need for the CRT to work in partnership with the construction industry to improve both the performance of CRT members as customers and the industry's performance in delivering the facilities and services needed.

At today's launch, attended by leading representatives of the industry and its customers, CRT Chairman Simon Murray, said: "The time has come to engage all parts of our supply chain in a comprehensive and co-operative plan of action. A plan of action that will tackle head-on the key issues of designing for our customers, improving our trading relationships with the construction industry and delivering our projects efficiently. A plan of action that will be taken up and owned by the construction industry. The CRT's Agenda for Change is that plan of action".

Murray, who is responsible for BAA's construction programme, warned against regarding this as just another initiative. He pointed out that the Agenda for Change is a public commitment by eleven of the largest clients of the UK construction industry, who have demonstrated their ability to achieve change. "We have to deliver on this commitment because it is critical to the future of our customers and our businesses."

In addition, the Agenda for Change is backed by practical ideas for implementation. CRT members directly control hundreds of projects that will be used to develop these ideas and demonstrate improvement.

The Building Research Establishment (BRE), which has an international reputation for its work on construction technologies and processes, has been appointed to manage the CRT's programme. Commenting on this, BRE managing director Dr Martin Wyatt, said: "BRE is delighted to be associated with the CRT and its Agenda for Change. We look forward to contributing, both our technical expertise and our experience in managing such programmes, to the successful outcome of this work".
