Millennium Dome design wins Buro Happold ISE's Structural Special Award and Institution Gold Medal

The Institution of Structural Engineers presented its Institution Gold Medal to Ian Liddell, Project leader of the Buro Happold design team of the Millennium Dome on Wednesday, 16 February 2000. The medal was awarded for his considerable contribution to structural engineering, including his contribution to the design of structures such as the Millennium Dome, Sydney Opera House, Drax Power Station, British Embassy, Riyadh, and more around the world.
The Millennium Dome was also recognised, winning a Structural Special Award, one of five buildings to be recognised this way under the ISE Structural Award scheme 2000. The citation stated "That a Structural Special Award be made to Buro Happold for the Millennium Dome being an icon for our times. The structure is based on the innovating principle of using straight tensioned cables and flat fabric rather than the doubly curved surfaces which had become the accepted form of such structures."
Ian Liddell, a founding Partner of Buro Happold, is a world expert in lightweight structures. His original innovative idea has allowed the Dome to become reality.
The award, first introduced in 1967, recognises physical achievement in structural engineering in its widest sense. Sixty-eight awards have been made in the past 32 years. The Structural Special Award for the Millennium Dome is realised in the form of an Institution scroll together with a plaque to be fixed at the Millennium Dome.
