The finalists for the second National Recycling Awards were announced recently at the Recycling & Waste Management Exhibition, at the BIC, Bournemouth (see Table II).

The chair of the judges, Jeff Cooper, producer responsibility co-ordinator at the Environment Agency, said: "There is a substantial amount of effort and inspiration in the recycling and waste management sector in the UK today and I feel the awards are an excellent way to recognise and reward this.

"In particular, the judges were looking for, and found, innovation and enterprise, balanced by the fact that we know how difficult it can be to hit recycling targets and to successfully develop projects and new products."

The finalists include top names, such as British Telecom, Waitrose, RMC, Ford and Tarmac, through to great examples of best practice at local authorities, such as South Lakeland, Powys, West Sussex and Anglia.

The National Recycling Awards has been able to secure key support from the DETR, which relaunched its "are you doing your bit" campaign earlier this year, which seeks to raise public awareness of environmental issues. Chris Mullin, MP, was to present the National Recycling Awards, along with well-known personality Bill Oddie.
