Conserving water in buildings – new fact cards published

Conserving water in buildings – new fact cards publishedKeywords: Conservation, Buildings, Environment, Water

The Environment Agency publishes updated information this week for saving water: a series of fact cards entitled Conserving Water in Buildings. When the Agency's National Water Demand Management Centre (NWDMC) published the original series of fact cards in 1999, they proved very popular. Since publication, technology has improved and new suppliers have emerged, resulting in much out-of-date information m the fact cards.

The objective is to provide a valuable source of information on the different types of water conservation methods and the range of water efficient hardware available, together with a comprehensive supplier list. The fact cards are designed for a broad audience, including facilities, environment and site managers in commerce, industry and the public sector, as well as households.

Ian Barker, Head of the NWDMC, said: "The density of population in parts of England and Wales means that the volume of rainfall available per capita is low; in parts of the south and east of England, it is less than the Sudan or Ethiopia. A population that expects a secure water supply also expects a healthy water environment. To meet these expectations we must all manage our use of precious water wisely."

The 11 cards focus on: domestic appliances; gardening; greywater; rainwater reuse; taps; flow regulation and leak detection devices; urinals; waterless and vacuum toilets; water efficient WCs and retrofits; showers and baths; and plumbing and heating system design and management.

The publication supports the Agency key themes of a "greener business world"; wiser, sustainable use of natural resources; limiting and adapting to climate change; and improved and protected inland and coastal waters.
