Purpose – Describes how the UK Learning and Skills Council has mainstreamed equality and diversity across the organization. Design/methodology/approach – Points out that the council was given a statutory duty to promote equality in the areas of gender, race and disability. Explains how it has done this, highlighting the commitment of senior managers to promoting equality and diversity, the communications strategy that backs this up and the training and monitoring system that support the progress being made. Outlines the practical measures, including local initiatives, that the council has put in place to develop equal opportunities. Findings – Cites the race equality scheme consultation, publication and training as a major success for the council’s equality and diversity strategy. Highlights the development of a single equality scheme as the next challenge facing the council. Practical implications – Sets out the practical steps that the Learning and Skills Council has taken to embed equality and diversity within the organization.
