Purpose – Interviews Nick Foster, vice president Oracle UK Ireland and South Africa, about the approach to human resource management taken by the software company. Design/methodology/approach – Quotes extensively from the interview. Discusses the image that many people have of Oracle as being an aggressive company that hires and fires staff without compunction, and sets out why this is a misjudgment. Also discusses the acquisitions of PeopleSoft and Siebel, and how the human resource aspects of these were handled. Lastly describes how the firm is trying to improve its image as an employer and as an organization. Findings – Rejects the idea that Oracle are poor employers, stressing the emphasis being placed by the company on helping employees from newly-acquired firms to settle into Oracle. Also draws attention to the greater focus that the company is placing on corporate social responsibility.
