Purpose – explains the steps taken by the National Audit Office (UK government department) to retain its newly-trained staff who were in high demand from private industry. Design/methodology/approach – quotes from representatives of the National Audit Office about the reasons why staff were leaving and the talent management programme that was set up in response. Describes the content of the talent management programme and the opportunities for development it offered. Illustrates this by describing the experience of some of the programme participants. Also describes other wider measures that have been developed, including a new reward structure and a new approach to employee communication. Discusses how the talent management programme may be extended. An inset gives more general advice on talent management. Findings – reports that the talent management programme has been successful in boosting the retention of key members of staff.
