Purpose – Examines the benefits for small to medium sized companies of establishing health and well-being programmes for their employees. Design/methodology/approach – Looks at the cost to New Zealand companies stemming from unwell employees; suggests that employers should take steps to ensure that if health problems arise they are dealt with promptly. Outlines the measures that small to medium sized enterprises can put in place to boost health and well-being at work; puts forward how many of them cost very little and that it is well worth the investment; identifies those factors that are most important in a wellness programme. Examines the benefits that a wellness programme provider can bestow on a company and puts forward a number of things that should be borne in mind when setting one up. Discusses the benefits of introducing subsidised workplace health insurance plans and looks at how it can cut the cost of illness.
