Purpose – Looks at the issues facing the fun-yet-focused culture at online retailer Zappos in light of its takeover by internet giant Amazon. Design/methodology/approach – Describes the company’s culture of high transparency and excellent customer service and lists its ten core values. Looks at the reasons behind the takeover and its likely impact particularly in terms of open communication about financial matters. Notes the possible effect on Amazon. Provides insets on recruitment policy, how the company treats employees and its programme to communicate its ideas about customers, employees and culture to other organisations. Findings – Considers that, although change is inevitable, Amazon’s declared commitment to the Zappos culture indicates it will continue.
