Looks at how attitudes towards office romances are changing, quoting from several human resource managers who believe that taking a restrictive view would be self-defeating. Indeed, quotes an employment law expert who argues that prohibiting office romances would be illegal as it would breach the right to a private life set out under the Human Rights Act. However underlines the need to have mechanisms in place that enable employees to report cases of harassment. Also notes that romances in some workplaces between certain types of employee can be proscribed, citing the case of investment banks in which there has to be a “Chinese Wall” between traders and analysts. Insets present the case of a couple who met at work, describe the difficulty of maintaining an office romance, and discuss the difficulties surrounding relationships between bosses and subordinates.
