Describes the lengthy and bureaucratic recruitment process that was used by the US federal government and agencies, and discusses how this has been streamlined within the agencies to make recruitment much quicker and efficient. Identifies why the new approach is better than the old, explaining how the new skills assessment test, which is available online to candidates, focuses on the core skills needed for the job and assesses these automatically. Suggests that the private sector could learn from aspects of this new approach, particularly in handling large volumes of applications. Highlights that both the time taken to recruit to a government post has dropped and the satisfaction of job applicants has risen, although acknowledges that some room still exists for improvement.ISSN: 1047-3149Reference: 41AA563
