Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions earns training accreditation

Article Type: Notes and news From: Industrial and Commercial Training, Volume 44, Issue 5

Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions has become one of the first organizations in the UK to have its in-house training courses accredited by Cskills Awards, the awarding organization of the Construction Industry Training Board-Construction Skills.

The company has developed a number of courses which its training team delivers to hundreds of employees every year, from the electricity, water and gas sectors.

The courses cover everything from the safe use of equipment, such as disc-cutters and vibratory rammers, to excavator-banksman training, ensuring that the safety and efficiency of the company’s essential work is constantly improving. Many lead to nationally-recognized qualifications, including National Vocational Qualifications and qualifications from national awarding bodies such as Construction Skills.

The first Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions course to be recognized by Cskills Awards is the slinger signaler (experienced worker) program, which has been delivered to more than 200 of the company’s operatives in the gas, water, cabling and overhead-lines sectors.

Accreditation by Cskills Awards ensures that best practice is shared and that workers can prove their competencies in the workplace.

Rob Sweeney, product developer at Construction Skills, said: “We are delighted to be working with Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions on this new model for delivering training. The company was one of the first to enter partnership with Construction Skills as part of a pilot program last year, and since then we have been very impressed with the openness, honesty and commitment to fulfilling the training vision shown by its training team.”

Bob Marsden, director of people and organizational development at Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions, said: “We are committed to investing in the development of our people by delivering high-quality training programs through our training team based at the Newton Training Center.

“We welcome the opportunity to promote training across our sector by working in partnership with organizations like Construction Skills. Achieving C Skills accreditation demonstrates to our employees and clients that our training is at a benchmark level.”
