Article Type: News and notes From: International Journal of Organizational Analysis, Volume 16, Issue 3

This issue of the International Journal of Organizational Analysis (IJOA) focuses both directly and indirectly on leadership. It is dedicated to the memory of our beloved colleague and friend, leadership scholar James G. “Jerry” Hunt, who passed away on July 22, 2008, at the age of 76. Jerry was a prolific writer, a pioneer in leadership research, founder of the SIU Biennial Leadership Symposiums, author or editor of over 20 books, a former Editor of the Journal of Management (JOM), Senior Editor of The Leadership Quarterly, a Fellow of the Academy of Management, and a member of the IJOA Editorial Board. He was also, as his British friends called him, “a sweet bloke.”

I knew Jerry for over 30 years. He gave me my first experience working with a journal when he invited me to serve on his JOM Editorial Board. Over the years, he was a consistent presence in the field, a dedicated and delightful colleague, and a good friend to many of us. He will be missed.

Jerry was to have written an invited essay for this issue. Out of respect for Jerry, another distinguished member of our Editorial Board, Allan Cohen (Babson College, USA), stepped in to write it. The essay is a response to Jim Clawson’s (University of Virginia, USA) insightful essay on “Leadership as managing energy.” Also in this issue is an invited essay by Francis Yammarino (State University of New York, Binghamton, USA), who examines the recent US Presidential Election and the Electoral College system as a “levels of analysis” investigation. Fran’s essay is followed by comments and reflections from two of the journal’s Associate Editors, Mariann Jelinek (College of William and Mary, USA) and John Michela (University of Waterloo, Canada). As always, the issue ends with Craig Lundberg’s (Cornell University, USA) inviting column, “Perplexities,” that is just as insightful and thought provoking as always.

I am also pleased to announce that we have added a new Associate Editor, Michael Roloff (Northwestern University, USA), along with four new Editorial Board members – Ronald J. Burke (York University, Canada), Laura P. Hartman (DePaul University, USA), Vernon D. Miller (Michigan State University, USA), and James G.S. Clawson (University of Virginia, USA). Each of them is rock solid, well published, and highly respected. We are fortunate to have each of them join the Editorial team.

Finally, I am also pleased to be able to say that we are now almost completely caught up and on schedule, ending the stream of late issues that plagued the journal under the previous editor’s tenure. The next issue is already in press and will arrive shortly in 2009. Also, we have two special issues coming: one on Service-Learning that Amy Kenworthy (Bond University, Australia) and Laurie DiPadova-Stocks (Park University, USA) are putting together for us; and the other on Entrepreneurship that Tim O’Keefe and Jim Haskins (University of North Dakota, USA) are putting together. I welcome proposals for additional special issues. Please send them to me at larry.pate@gmail.com

The Editorial team and I are doing everything possible to raise the bar and bring the Journal up to the very highest standards. But in the final analysis, this is your Journal. Write and tell us how we are doing.
