The Role of Government?

In Australia, the Federal Government’s Office of Workplace Services now hands down penalties, including fines, for employers who fail to keep detailed records as part of new Work Choices laws.

The Opposition says punishing bosses will do nothing for the economy: “Labor thinks the compliance programs conducted by the Office of Workplace Services are too little, too late … and will hinder, not help workplace efficiencies”, opposition industrial relations spokesman Stephen Smith said.

“The Government’s extreme industrial relations changes do nothing to build workplace productivity and do nothing to make Australia more internationally competitive.”
