The project BEIDS (Baltic Environmental Information Dissemination System) is an inter-sectorial initiative aimed at the circulation of intelligent information on energy, transport and sustainable development issues in the Baltic Sea Region. It contributes to networking and know-how exchange, complementing efforts towards transregional cooperation in sustainable spatial planning on the basis of Baltic 21.

The project, led by the Hamburg Ministry of Environment (Umweltbehörde) and executed by the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg's technology transfer agency (TuTech), involves partners in Denmark, Finland, Germany, Sweden (EU) and Lithuania and Poland (non-EU). More recently, Russia has joined the project.

The project BEIDS strives to improve cross-sectorial communication on the environment sector as a whole and on energy and transport issues in particular, catalysing the search for sustainable solutions for the region's problems. Its cross-sectorial nature means that universities and colleges work hand in hand with government agencies, civil servants, NGOs and companies.

The first phase of the project, which runs from October 1999 to August 2001, has a total budget of US$1.04 million. A second phase, from September 2001 to August 2004, is being planned. Up-to-date information on the key themes of the project, namely energy, transport and sustainable development in the Baltic Sea Region, are available on the project's multi-lingual (English, Danish, Finnish, German, Lithuanian, Polish, Russian and Swedish) Web site (http://www.beids.de). Moroever, a distribution list and a newsletter serve the purpose of fostering information exchange and dissemination within each participant country and across the region.
