Fifth European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns – Taking the Commitments to the Streets
21-24 March 2007, Sevilla, Spain
Around 1,000 delegates committed to sustainability are expected to attend this conference, which builds on the success and tradition of European local governments to meet, to exchange and to concretely commit to advancing sustainability in Europe. It follows the series of conferences held in Aalborg, 1994; Lisbon, 1996; Hannover, 2000; and Aalborg, 2004.
The event will provide an insight of the progress and achievements in local sustainability in Europe, made through the implementation of the Aalborg Commitments and Aalborg Charter, and thus to foster sustainability in your own city or town. It will also introduce recently developed tools, instruments and knowledge that can support cities or towns in their efforts to accelerate sustainability. 3rd International Conference on Sustainable Development and Planning
25-27 April 2007, Algarve, Portugal
Following the success of the first two meetings (Skiathos, Greece, 2003; and Bologna, Italy, 2005) it has been decided to reconvene the International Conference on Sustainable Development and Planning in Portugal.
The conference addresses the subjects of regional development in an integrated way as well as in accordance with the principles of sustainability. It has become apparent that planners, environmentalists, architects, engineers, policy makers and economists have to work together in order to ensure that planning and development can meet our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations.
In recent years, there has been in many countries, an increase in spatial problems that has lead to planning crises. Planning problems are often connected with uneven development, deterioration of the quality of urban life and destruction of the environment. The increasing urbanisation of the world coupled with the global issues of environmental pollution, resources shortage and economic restructuring demand that we make our cities places worth living in.
On the other hand, problems of environmental management and planning are not restricted to urban areas. Environments such as rural areas, forests, coastal regions and mountains face their own problems that require urgent solutions in order to avoid irreversible damages. The use of modern technologies in planning give us new potential to monitor and prevent environmental degradation.
Effective strategies for management should consider planning and regional development, two closely related disciplines, and emphasise the demand to handle these matters in an integrated way. This conference provides a common forum for all scientists specialising in the range of subjects included within sustainable development and planning. Environmental Management Accounting and Sustainable Supply Chains
24-25 May 2007, Theme: Environmental Management Accounting and Sustainable Supply Chains Helsinki University of Technology, Helsinki, Finland
The Environmental Management Accounting Network Europe (EMAN-EU) will hold its 10th Annual Conference at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management of the Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. The conference will be held on 24 and 25 May 2007 under the theme “Environmental Management Accounting and Sustainable Supply Chains”
Sustainability and supply chain management are both complex areas, but the combination of both is where value creation and sustainability meet reality, in difficult to manage and increasingly globalised supply chain networks. Improving the sustainability of supply chains encompasses the identification of problematic social and environmental issues, the assessment of their impacts and risks, as well as efforts to improve organisations' operations. A general consensus exists of the necessity of sustainable supply chains and continuous cooperation between different supply chain parties. However, developments in this area are still needed. EMA helps companies by quantifying environmental loads and impacts and by identifying costs and savings, as well as risks and opportunities related to companies' operations. EMA produces exact measures that are vital in all efficient management practises, including the sustainable management of supply chains.
The conference theme addresses the issues of how companies and organisations use EMA in their supply chain management. Specific topics, which could be addressed in the conference contributions, include:
- •
EMA tools for sustainable supply chains;
- •
innovations in EMA and sustainable supply chain management;
- •
adoption in practice of the innovations in EMA and sustainable supply chain management;
- •
incorporation of EMA into decision making with supply chains;
- •
challenges and opportunities for EMA and supply chain management;
- •
surveys and empirical analyses of innovative approaches;
- •
case studies; and
- •
other topics related to environmental management accounting and sustainable supply chains
