Diary

5-6 February 2008, NH Podium, Barcelona, Spain

The inaugural Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) Congress will focus on the policies and financing mechanisms necessary to support market growth. This exciting event will draw upon the experiences of market pioneers from Europe, the USA, North African and the Middle East, providing delegates with a roadmap to developing CSP projects.

The host country, Spain, remains the fourth largest manufacturer of solar power technology worldwide with government commitments to achieve 12 per cent of primary energy from renewables by 2010. Spain has also included 200MW of solar thermal generation capacity and new solar feed-in tariffs to drive the development of CSP projects and technology. The two day interactive high-level seminar will examine the burgeoning challenges and opportunities in getting CSP projects up and running as more countries recognize the potential. Focusing on success stories from across the international playing field and tracking progress to date, our conference will examine the major barriers facing projects on the regulatory and financial level and the key steps needs to overcome them. International Conference on Waste Engineering and Management

28-30 May 2008, Hong Kong, China

The International Conference on Waste Engineering and Management will be held in Hong Kong on 28-30 May 2008. The theme of the event, waste management, has become one of the key issues of the modern world, an international issue that is intensified by the volume and complexity of domestic and industrial waste.

There is a need for more research on current disposal methods such as landfills, incineration, and chemical treatment, but also on recycling, waste minimization, clean technologies, waste monitoring, public and corporate awareness and general education.

The purpose of the conference is to advance the understanding and application of civil engineering with respect to sustainable development in general, and environmental and waste engineering and management in particular, and to promote the exchange of technical, scientific and professional knowledge on waste engineering and management to better serve the interests and welfare of the public. International Conference on “Studying, Modeling and Sense Making of Planet Earth”

1-6 June 2008, University of the Aegean, Mytilene, Lesvos, Greece

The Scientific and the Organizing Committee invite papers for the international conference “Studying, Modeling and Sense Making of Planet Earth.” The conference will consist of three parallel streams as follows:

(1) Studying the earth system – it will be devoted to the natural sciences, the links within their fields and subfields as well as their links to the social sciences.

(2) Modelling the earth system – it will be devoted to selected modeling fields with an emphasis on integrated modeling of the various components of the earth system at various spatial and temporal scales.

(3) Sense making of the earth system – it will be devoted to the social and the policy sciences and the humanities (economics, sociology, psychology, political sciences, policy sciences, spatial planning, history) that try to make sense of the ways people perceive, function, modify and, in general, interact with the earth system, at the same time being a part of it.

17th World Hydrogen Energy Conference

15-19 June 2008, Brisbane, Australia

Following successful conferences in Yokohama in 2004 and Lyon in 2006, Brisbane, Australia will stage the 17th World Hydrogen Energy Conference in 2008. The conference will provide extensive networking opportunities to delegates and deliver the most relevant information on all matters concerning hydrogen and fuel cell technology. The 17th World Hydrogen Energy Conference will cover a wide range of technical issues; from how hydrogen is safely produced, stored, transported and utilised to broader topics such as environment, education and regulatory developments.

The programme of the 17th World Hydrogen Energy Conference in 2008 will cover a range of topics highlighting the complex issues of hydrogen as an energy carrier. These will include methods of generating hydrogen, materials for hydrogen storage, infrastructure development and hydrogen utilisation technologies, particularly fuel cell systems.

The subject of hydrogen generation will cover everything from the conversion of fossil fuels to the use of renewable energy sources and nuclear power. Fossil fuel conversion includes processes for the gasification of coal and biomass, thermochemical systems such as steam reforming, and photochemical systems. The electricity produced from natural renewable energy sources, or even nuclear electricity, could be used to generate hydrogen by the electrolysis of water and development of these technologies will be reviewed.
