The idea for this special issue emerged during a research project on non-working mothers and their return to the labour market in a European comparative perspective, co-directed by Marina Hennig and Professor Jutta Allmendiger at the Social Science Research Centre Berlin (WZB). Marina Hennig would like to thank the WZB and Professor Allmendiger for providing guidance and support with the preparation of this special issue. Professor Colin Williams, Editor of the International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy, immediately liked the idea of doing this special issue, and Marina Hennig is grateful for his helpful comments and support with putting it together. She is especially indebted to Anna Erika Hägglund, without whose assistance and support this issue would never have appeared. Not only did she manage the communications between the Editor, the authors, and the reviewers, she also helped Marina organize the contents and provided valuable input for our own contributions in this issue.
