The National Library Foundation (Fundação Biblioteca Nacional) of Brazil are to make 500 Brazilian books available on the Internet by the end of the year 2000. The complete texts will be in download files on the Library Web site.

The project has started and its aim is to offer the public 1,000 digitised books by the end of 2001. The books to be used are all in the public domain and have been selected because they are considered to be good examples of Brazilian culture. Different editions of the same book have been compared to come to a text as near the author's original as is possible. The digitisation of the books is being sponsored by the Culture Ministry and Faperj (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado Rio de Janeiro – the Rio de Janeiro State Foundation for Research Shelter), but to maintain the project's momentum new sponsors are being actively sought.

The National Library of Brazil is one of the country's oldest institutions and was established when the Portuguese Royal Library was transferred to Brazil as a result of Napoleon Bonaparte's invasion of Portugal.
