UK libraries confusion at the top
The lack of joined up government in the UK continues. It is well illustrated by the remarks of Lord McIntosh below. After eight years in office the UK government still hasn't addressed, let alone resolved, the separation of strategy and implementation for libraries. It is ironic given the stress on joined up government by “New Labour”
Libraries should “get right deals”
The minister in charge of public libraries, Lord McIntosh of the DCMS has hinted at changes to the library supply business, following publication of the government's framework for the future of libraries. He called for local authorities to take full responsibility for improvements, as libraries were unlikely to receive ring-fenced funding. He also stressed that although the DCMS has responsibility for standards in libraries, it is unable to supply the means to carry them out. The debate heard calls for the government to increase its funding to local authorities for libraries in its forthcoming spending review. Lord Harrison also urged libraries to update stock, as too many of them fail to buy sufficient copies of recently issued books through lack of funds
