Slim new ProSix-S5 series saves space and offers fast cycle times

Epson® has announced that it has launched the S5 series, a new line of robots in the company’s ProSix series of six-axis, vertically articulated industrial robots. The S5 series, which consists models called the S5 and S5L, carries on the tradition of the PS series of vertical six-axis robots, which come with Epson’s original Smart Motion Control technology*, a package that provides outstanding continuous-path control and enables high speed with low vibration. The new robots are engineered for fast, accurate assembly of even smaller components, and their slim design makes them even more space efficient.

Main features and advantages of the S5 series:

  1. 1.

Agility and repeatability among the best in class:

  2. 2.

With some of the shortest cycle times in their class, these robots boost throughput in assembly processes that require speed and accuracy.

  3. 3.

Standard cycle times in the 0.4-s range, with repeatability of ±0.02 mm (S5) (long-arm S5L repeatability is ±0.03 mm).

  4. 4.

    High space efficiency:

  5. 5.

Slim body with a large motion range:

  6. 6.

Elbow (J3 arm) area only about half the size of that of models in the PS series.

  7. 7.

Slim body notwithstanding, the operating area of the S5 series is 1.7 times larger than that of the PS series, the space of the operating area being 46 times (S5) and 87 times (S5L) larger than the cubic volume of the robot. These robots are powerful allies for customers looking to save space and increase the compactness of their assembly lines.

  8. 8.

The J5 axis has a motion range 10 per cent wider than that of its predecessors, with a dexterous, ±135° pitch wrist.

  9. 9.

Accommodate a wide variety of installation environments:

  10. 10.

These robots are available in standard, cleanroom (according to ISO4), and enhanced dust and water protection (IP65) specifications, for installation in a wide variety of environments.

  11. 11.

    Green automation:

  12. 12.

Through a 230 V single-phase power line, the new machine only consumes in average about 1 KVA electrical power. This helps customers to reduce their energy cost and reduces the total cost of ownership.

Note*Epson Smart Motion Technology: new acceleration/deceleration tuning and other original Epson robot control technologies that enable high speed while achieving low vibration by optimising robot motion (straight and arcing motions, and motion when carrying heavy loads).
