This issue of the Journal of Chinese Economic and Foreign Trade Studies has four papers contributed by our Editorial Advisory Board members. They provide insightful viewpoints on China’s economic growth and comprehensibly discuss the impacts and policy implications of WTO accession for China.

In the first paper, “China’s ten-years in WTO – review and perspectives”, Huijiong Wang (Development Research Center of the State Council, China), Shantong Li (Development Research Center of the State Council, China), and Qi Wang (Gallaudet University) aim to facilitate discussion and deepen the current understanding about China’s WTO experience. They review four studies which are selected purposefully to outline as objectively as possible the many aspects of lessons, experiences, achievements, and areas in need of further reform in China’s ten years accession into WTO. Different views from leading academic and official publications are presented. In addition, the authors contribute their own perspectives on some issues, which have not been fully discussed yet. It is hoped that the successful lessons and experiences from China’s remarkable WTO track record can benefit other developing countries and transitional economies seeking economic growth and prosperity by engaging in open trade and operating by rules.

In “Research on the effects of WTO accession on China’s economic growth: path analysis and empirical study”, Zhang Zhiming (Liaoning University), Zhang Xin (Dalian Nationalities University), and Cui Riming (Liaoning University) study the impacts of WTO accession on economic growth in China. They find that China’s accession to the WTO has fostered China’s economic growth via the following channels: foreign trade, economic reform, and FDI. However, China’s entry into WTO has not significantly facilitated its economic growth via technological innovation.

In “How does OFDI affect trade development in developing countries”, Yongchang Qiang (Fudan University) examines effects of outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) on trade development; and derives industrial development policy implications for the sectors of mining, manufacturing, finance and business service in China. He also suggests how China may make its OFDI location choices.

The special issue concludes with a paper by R. Miniesy and J. Adams (The British University in Egypt), “China: the next ten years?”. The authors discuss where China is likely to see its economic expansion under a new leadership and at the same time what this could mean for the economy of Egypt. They suggest that over the next ten years there will be substantial potential for the two economies to come closer in a number of strategically important sectors. They also argue that China could and should come to see Egypt as a springboard for access to EU markets and to the emerging markets in Africa and the Middle East. On the Egypt front they argue that China represents, so far, a very under targeted market for Egyptian exports and could represent a significant driver for Egypt’s economic growth over the next ten years.
