Book reviews

Mea culpa! The Book Reviews Editor goofed and over a space of about six months somehow secured two copies of the book Boom and assigned it to two different reviewers. Since both are loyal JCM reviewers and since each has a somewhat different take on the book, the Editor, Publisher, and I agreed that it would be interesting and instructive to run both reviews. An earlier review by Janis Dietz ran in issue no. 1 (2007) of JCM, and another review, by Traci Warrington, appears in this issue.

In reading and comparing these two reviews, you will notice that each emphasizes different aspects of the book and finds somewhat different themes for the book overall as well as within certain chapters. Even the reported page count is different (depends on whether you count the index and other back matter or not). All this serves to remind us how subjective book reviewers – and critics in general – can be in what they select to report as well as their interpretation of what they discuss. Lesson: never let reading a review of a book that interests you substitute for reading the book for yourself!
