The management of public sector real estate assets is now a key issue for all governments as they seek to repair depleted “national balance sheets” and look for reductions in operating costs. So, it is timely that this special edition of the Journal of Corporate Real Estate is focused on the subject of managing public sector portfolios in a number of countries.

An overview of the task faced by those managing such portfolios is given in our interview with Keith Jones, who heads up specialist consultancy Performent Carter. Keith has a wealth of experience in public sector asset management, is co-editor of the RICS Asset Management Guidelines and is an advisor to the UK Treasury and other government departments.

Our research papers cover the organisational issues for public sector asset managers, the resources and capabilities they need to optimise the management of their portfolios and the financial and organisational questions which they and their management colleagues need to answer.

The particular interest in this set of papers is that they come from Scandinavia, Malaysia, Australia and the UK, all with a common theme of real estate asset management but each with a different perspective on the subject.

As a result, we believe this special edition of the journal will make a unique contribution to the growing library of literature on this very important subject.
