The Nordic Institute of Advanced Training in Occupational Health (NIVA) provides advanced training for researchers and experts within the occupational health and work-life field. NIVA is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM).

In order to present the latest information and research results in this field, the NIVA courses and seminars are based on the combined knowledge of the five Nordic countries. In addition, well-known international experts are engaged as lecturers. The working language of NIVA is English to make it possible to also accept qualified applicants outside the Nordic countries.

NIVA provides courses and seminars both for occupational health and safety practitioners and for scientists. During recent years, courses have been offered in areas such as:

  • ergonomics and musculoskeletal health;

  • toxicology;

  • dermatology;

  • asthma, allergy and respiratory diseases;

  • safety;

  • psychosocial factors.

The scope of the NIVA courses has gradually broadened and in 1999 will include areas such as flexible work patterns and new work organization, environmental and occupational health, as well as more classical health and safety issues.

The courses or symposia usually last five days and are arranged in convention centres all over the Nordic countries. Special courses are also provided for the Baltic countries. The Nordic Council of Ministers provides the funding via NIVA for the courses held in the Baltic States, mainly for Baltic participants, as well as for scholarships for Baltic participants attending the ordinary courses.

NIVA is currently updating its homepage on the Internet (http://www. occuphealth.fi/niva) where information about new courses as well as evaluations of past courses will be available.
