The British Council Youth Millennium Awards aim to provide individual young adults (aged between 18 and 28) who are currently working or residing in the UK with an opportunity to obtain international experience and develop themselves in a way that will lead to the enrichment of their local communities.

There were 400 individual awards in 1998, and there will be 600 in 1999 and 500 in the year 2000. The core grant for each award will be around £1,000, which can cover preparatory costs, travel costs, daily subsistence and follow-up activities. At least 10 per cent of the actual costs should be raised by the locality, through local sponsorship or raised by the individual. The activities supported should involve:

  • learning by comparative analysis and hands-on experience (such as job shadowing or placements);

  • undertaking training which will improve skills in community work;

  • representing the local community in another European or worldwide context.

For more information and an application form, contact the Millennium Awards Officer at the Information Unit, Youth Exchange Centre, The British Council, 10 Spring Gardens, London SW1A 2BN. Tel: 0171 389 4046.
