Guidelines to ensure that public employment services (PES) contribute effectively to the EU's employment strategy were published recently. The PES network in the EU has a crucial role to play, particularly in promoting employability, one of the four themes of the strategy, the European Commission says in its Communication. This should include the development of strong partnerships with other relevant organizations in the labour market, and contributing to the co-ordinated delivery of public services to jobseekers. The Commission also calls for the PES with more than 5,000 local employment offices throughout the EU to be more actively involved in the European Employment Network, EURES. This would increase job opportunities and improve the matching of jobs on the European labour market.
