The directors of SecuriCare International, specialists in conflict management, have developed a new solution to address the growing phenomenon of air rage. With the emphasis on the prevention of anti-social behaviour, the CD-ROM based system equips flight deck crews with the skills necessary to support the cabin crew when a serious incident occurs.

The system provides a flexible training package which allows flight deck crews to study at a pace and time to suit their individual needs. This in turn reduces the need for costly and lengthy training days.

The CD-ROM package takes the crew member through a variety of scenes that reflect the incidents most commonly experienced by cabin crew. The training includes:

  • understanding and coping with the effects of stress and adrenalin;

  • understanding challenging behaviour and how cabin crew should respond;

  • an awareness of the factors that affect people's behaviour;

  • interpersonal and communication skills;

  • action plan and emergency procedures.

Through a series of interactive demonstrations, the programme takes the trainee through video footage and role plays. They learn about the necessary de-escalation skills, positive body language, verbal and non-verbal communication techniques. The programme includes self-assessment questions at the end of each section to confirm a level of understanding and competence.

Phil Hardy, Managing Director of SecuriCare International, says: "Aggressive behaviour is endemic in our society today. We believe that the safety of cabin crew is paramount. They should be trained first and foremost in preventive techniques prior to any physical intervention training. The CD-ROM package uses the latest technology to provide up-to-date and flexible training which aims to empower flight deck crew to tackle problems before they escalate to what has become known as 'air rage'."
