The German Government's crash programme, "100,000 Jobs for the Young" has begun well. By 31 January 1999, a total of 5,800 young people had been given a fresh start. Employment offices reported having already interviewed 124,000 under-25s.

Some 63,900 have already had a job offer within the framework of the programme. On top of that, in January alone, some 500,000 jobless under-25s were written to and asked to contact their local employment office about a concrete offer to hand.

The aim is to make available to all men and women up to the age of 25 training, practical advice and counselling to enable them to enter into regular employment. This year, the programme has a budget of DM2 billion, of which some DM600 million will come from the European Social Fund.

Special emphasis is being laid on three areas of activity:

  1. 1.

    environmental protection;

  2. 2.

    social services;

  3. 3.

    youth work.

In towns and cities, there are projects to maintain and restore public monuments, as well as programmes for urban renewal and bringing new amenities to run-down areas.
