Leading training and development specialist, Financial Times Management, is currently working on an online assessment and accreditation programme as part of a pan-European consortium of experts. CREDIT (which stands for capabilities, registration, evaluation, diagnosis and advice through internet technology) is a European-funded project designed to create the ultimate prototype in Internet-based training and development programmes.

The purpose of the CREDIT project is to develop state-of-the-art technologies in a user-friendly format to provide users with two complementary services from a single gateway:

  1. 1.

    1 support for the collection of evidence (and an online assessment based on this portfolio);

  2. 2.

    2 advice on further training possibilities (based on the outcome of the assessment).

The project is being managed by the University of Amsterdam, together with a network of business partners in Germany, Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands and the UK, who are responsible for gathering data on the needs and requirements of prospective users. A truly international exercise, CREDIT also involves two companies dedicated to developing the technical platform required to deliver the CREDIT programme (Telematica Limited from the UK and Eire's International Consultancy Network), as well as CINOP, the Dutch centre for innovation in vocational training, which is co-ordinating the various user groups involved.

Commenting on the project, managing director of Financial Times Management - Corporate Development, Professor John Trasler, said:

The CREDIT prototype is an exciting new development for anyone interested in training and development programmes that lead to the achievement of a nationally recognized qualification.

A dynamic and user-friendly alternative to traditional paper-based methods, it is expected to make the collection of evidence quicker, easier and specifically relevant to the qualification being sought. The objective is to make it appealing for anyone involved in an APEL and competence-based learning process. We aim to pilot the process with large numbers of users over the next 12 months.

In addition to individual users, large corporates are expected to respond positively to the CREDIT project, recognizing a genuine business development tool that is easily accessible and provides access to nationally and internationally recognized standards of achievement.

The CREDIT prototype is accessible only to those involved in the project during its developmental phase although, once the project is completed, the system will be freely available to anyone using the Web to search for training and development advice, assistance and accreditation.
