Keywords: European Union, Older employees
The proportion of older workers in the EU will increase by 5.5 million in the next ten years. Instead of discriminating against older workers, employers should actively encourage their participation in the workforce.
The London Borough of Hounslow has banned age restrictions from its recruitment advertisements, and a Dutch company has set up a refresher course in workplace technology for staff aged 40+. Furthermore, a Belgian firm allows older workers more flexible working hours, and a French construction company abolished early retirement in 1993, opting instead for a phased retirement scheme.
