The European Commission supports academic initiatives which spread the message of European integration. Since 1989, the Jean Monnet Project has enabled Member States to set up 1,722 new teaching projects in universities in Europe. It aims to facilitate the introduction of European integration studies in universities by means of start-up subsidies. The studies refer in particular to the construction of the EU and its related institutional, legal, political, economic and social developments. They target disciplines in which EU developments are an increasingly important part of the subject, i.e. EU law, European economic and political integration, and history of the European construction process. The project's funds are awarded on a co-financing basis for a start-up period of three years in exchange for a commitment made by the university to maintain the teaching activities for seven years altogether.
