This year's International Conference and Exposition took place in late May in the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, USA. The number of participants increases each year with an ever higher proportion of overseas delegates and this year more than 15,000 training and development professionals from all over the world took part in the conference and visited the exhibition.

Of the three keynote speakers, two were academics: Lester Thurow from MIT and Rosabeth Moss Kanter from Harvard Business School. The third speaker was Richard Barrett, former values coordinator at the World Bank. In addition, there were some 250 sessions led by HRD experts. These were designed around seven key areas: going global; measuring and evaluating training and performance; organization development; performance improvement; learning technologies; training basics; and workplace issues.

There was a range of pre-conference, all-day, in-depth workshops and an exposition of nearly 600 training and development suppliers. The conference also offered informal opportunities for learning and networking, new technology and experiential learning pavilions, discussions and book-signing sessions with authors, company tours, social events and other activities sponsored by ASTD's special interest forums.

ASTD's conferences provide learning experiences which cannot be matched anywhere in the world. You may like to consider attending next year's event (Dallas, Texas, 21-25 May 2000) or the one following that (Orlando, Florida, 3-7 June 2001) or both.
