The Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research (CILT) has established a National Languages Forum to oversee planning for the European Year of Languages 2001 in the UK. National Committees in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are being set up and efforts at regional and local level are being strongly encouraged.

The aims of the European Year of Languages are to promote language capability and the appreciation of the importance of foreign languages. A number of national and international events are already planned including a languages challenge, a youth festival and a conference on "Linguistic policies in a multilingual society" in October 2001.

Many schools, colleges and businesses have already informed CILT of their ideas and plans for the Year. HarperCollins publishers have agreed to be a major sponsor and additional sponsors are being sought.

You can register your interest and plans for the European Year of Languages 2001 by e-mailing: eyl@cilt.org.uk
