Helping others to deal with death

Keywords: Bereavement, Counselling

Death and bereavement are as much a part of life as they ever were, yet are considered even more taboo in the twenty-first century than they were at the beginning of the last one.

To help those who work with bereaved individuals and families, Age Concern has produced the Understanding Bereavement Training Pack, which provides a training programme for use with carers working with older people in residential or care homes.

The pack is designed to be used by experienced staff and managers, and is aimed predominantly at care assistants, nursing auxiliaries and volunteers employed by statutory authorities, hospitals and health services, plus agencies and residential and nursing homes within both the voluntary and private sectors.

It gives staff working within these organizations the right information to deal sensitively with grieving residents and relatives, and guide them through the process of registering a death and organizing a funeral. It also explains the rituals, customs and culture that surround death, along with where to find information, help and counselling.

Gordon Lishman, Director-General, Age Concern England, said: "If discussing death is going to be a less inhibiting factor in modern society, then people need help to discuss the subject without being completely overwhelmed by emotion.

"An 'out of sight, out of mind' attitude does little to help those struggling with grief, and most studies show that newly bereaved people have a very strong need to talk about the person they have lost. This pack will help that happen."

The Understanding Bereavement Training Pack, by Toni Battison, £35.00 plus £1.95 postage and packing, ISBN 0-86242-304-X, can be ordered from Age Concern Books on 0870 4422044, or send a cheque to Age Concern Books, PO Box 232, Newton Abbot, Devon TQ12 4XQ.
