Brighter picture for vocational training in Germany

The picture for vocational training in Germany looks rather better than previously.

From October 1999 to September 2000, 625,400 apprentice places were notified to the employment offices. The western states have a broad balance. In the east, there are still more youngsters looking for a training place than there are openings available.

The demand for careers in IT and the media is still booming. In 1997, there were just 5,600 apprenticeship agreements in this field; by autumn 2000, the total had risen to around 40,000. In the near future, the figure may reach 60,000 if vocational training schools can find room for all the youngsters given a training place by employers.

In the overall field of vocational training, the peak is expected to be reached between 2004 and 2006. Employers are being urged now to look ahead to make sure the comparatively large crop of school-leavers will have enough openings. However, it has already been said that by 2007 demographic changes, i.e. fewer school-leavers, will make suitable applicants for apprenticeships "thin on the ground".
