Grundtvig off to a flying start

The results of the first full call for proposals have been announced under the Grundtvig programme, which provides EU support for adult-learning projects in Europe.

Across all 30 participating countries, 50 European co-operation projects have been supported. These involve organizations from at least three different countries, which aim to produce innovative courses, modules, materials and teaching methods.

Some 478 learning partnerships have been supported. These are smaller-scale, grass-roots projects, which provide opportunities for learners from different countries to work together on joint projects. Many involve small voluntary and community groups with no previous experience of EU programmes.

Six networks have been supported. These projects are policy-oriented and designed to promote discussion and analysis of current issues in respect of adult learning and to disseminate innovative approaches.

Among the successful projects are: working in partnership with football clubs to engage learners, particularly young men, with a view to improving their basic skills; developing the skills of staff from voluntary and community groups which work with refugees and asylum seekers; helping women who are victims of domestic violence to overcome barriers to learning and employment; training adult learners in active citizenship, democracy and participation; improving the literacy skills of travellers through the recording of life stories; and empowering the parents of children with disabilities through informal learning and peer mentoring.
