Metals centre of excellence will steel the industry for the future

A new metals centre of excellence – welding together scientific expertise with industry know-how to identify gaps in research and development – is to be set up in Britain.

The National Metals Technology Centre (NaMTeC) will bring together industry, science and academia to create an unusual network and facility for UK metal producers, fabricators and users.

The centre, to be located in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, will play a key role in plans to develop a high-growth "cluster" based around advanced engineering and metals in the region. It will also provide advice and expert help to the vast majority of small firms in the metal-producing and using industry sectors in Britain.

Commenting on the Government's £2.7 million help for the scheme, trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt said: "The National Metals Technology Centre is good news for South Yorkshire and good news for the metal industry. It is appropriate that South Yorkshire, a region synonymous with the metal industry since the industrial revolution, should be the location for the centre of excellence.

"I commend all the metal-industry partners, including UK Steel, TWI, Casting Technology International and the Confederation of British Metal Formers, for their vision, and look forward to the National Metals Technology Centre becoming a reality."

Graham Hall, chairman of Yorkshire Forward, the regional development agency, said: "Yorkshire Forward's commitment to strengthen the advanced metals and engineering cluster in our region builds on our history but takes our business base into innovative value-added global markets. The centre will attract more high-technology businesses, help them to improve productivity and provide a centre of expertise to small and embryonic businesses."
