"More action" needed to create knowledge-based society
"More action" needed to create knowledge-based society
Less talk and more action is needed to make Europe the world's most competitive knowledge-based society, says Baron Daniel Janssen, European Round Table of Industrialists chairman.
He said the goal remained feasible, but admitted that his organization was disappointed at the rate of progress in general and stalling in key areas such as the creation of a Europe-wide patent.
Erkki Liikanen, European commissioner for enterprise and the information society, said that more effort was needed in education, training and lifelong learning, as for Europe, "the most promising areas are often the most knowledge-intensive". Ensuring digital skills for all would be particularly crucial in creating the e-Europe of tomorrow.
Mr Liikanen also emphasized the importance of research and development, faster adoption of broadband technology, the promotion of Internet content, getting governments online and improving Internet security.
