Austria provides new opportunities for young under-achievers

Austria has introduced a scheme to give young people who leave secondary education without qualifications a second chance to gain vocational skills.

"Jobfabrik" combines practice-orientated project work with intensive guidance. As well as helping the young people towards a vocational qualification, the scheme seeks to impart key skills such as flexibility, reliability and a sense of responsibility.

Alongside project work and guided learning, the young people are given around five hours a week of theoretical tuition, based on their practical work and the general requirements of their chosen trade. Remedial teaching is also available, if necessary.

Young people who successfully gain a job through the scheme receive follow-up visits for their first six months in employment.
