High-technology innovations concentrated in 13 EU regions
More than half of all high-technology patents submitted to the European Patent Office in 2000 came from 13 out of 211 EU regions, according to a report from Eurostat, the EU statistical office.
The number of high-technology patent applications increased by around 22 per cent a year between 1995 and 2000, to reach 10,500. Oberbayern (Germany) accounted for 1,132 applications, the Ile de France (France) had 854 and Noord-Brabant (The Netherlands) accounted for 633. When the number of patent applications is scaled to take account of the size of the labour force, Oberbayern remains top, followed by Uusimaa (Finland) and Noord-Brabant.
The report also notes that "a strong concentration of R&D in one or two regions of each member state is a common feature".
Meanwhile, the European Research Council has given a positive response to the Commission target of involving businesses in achieving research spending equivalent to 3 per cent of gross domestic product in each EU member state by 2010.
