Finland extends on-the-job training

Finland extends on-the-job training

Finland is extending its initial vocational training to three years, which must include at least six months training "on the job". The aim is to increase the number of new apprentices in the country.

The move follows the success of a pilot programme, entitled "Bridge from Education to Work", which was funded by the education ministry and European Social Fund.

Emphasis is being placed on ensuring the quality of on-the-job training offered. More resources are being provided, targets are being set and new testing procedures developed. Special attention is also being paid to co-ordinating on-the-job and theoretical training, and training teachers and instructors.
