Planes, trains and wasted training budgets
Companies are spending around 40 per cent of their available training budgets on travel expenses, resulting in less money being available for training staff who desperately need it.
Research reveals that many employers feel they have to send theiremployees hundreds of miles toattend specialized courses. Extra cost accumulates because of hotel and other expenses incurred on training that lasts several days.
"At a time when purse strings are often tight, businesses are becoming increasingly frustrated that significant portions of their training budgets are being spent in this kind of way", said Barbara Greenway, managing director of Parity, which carried out the research. "A lot of these budgets are soaked up by unnecessary costs because companies do not realize that they can use regional training centres.
"The purpose of such centres is to save companies and individuals time, money and inconvenience, and meet the needs of local businesses. If quality training facilities are available on your doorstep, it does not make sense to travel long distances and spend unnecessarily."
She suggested that companies looking to invest in training should also explore the possibility of arranging on-site training.
