Lex Harvey wins "Beacon" status

UK materials-handling specialist Lex Harvey has underlined its commitment to work-based training and joined an elite set of further-education providers after being presented with "Beacon" status.

Introduced last year, the Learning and Skills Council Beacons recognize excellent and good teaching and learning across a whole provider, supported by equally high standards of leadership and management. This year, only six companies received the award and in total there are only 25 private training providers who have received the award.

Lex Harvey was awarded the status in recognition of its first-class inspection results and outstanding performance in its Learning and Skills Council assessment.

Lifelong learning, further and higher education minister Margaret Hodge presented the award. "We must recognize and celebrate success in the further-education and work-based-learning sectors", she said. "Lex Harvey has maintained excellent standards in integrating key skills, the use of mentors and promoting and celebrating success and the role of the employer. This is a local work-based-learning provider to be proud of, and I look forward to many more following its lead."

Lex Harvey training co-ordinator Jos Kemp said: "We are all really pleased to have official recognition for the work done by a dedicated team of apprentices, NVQ assessors and excellent mentor engineers. We took the training scheme in-house in 1996, so this achievement marks the culmination of seven years' hard work.

"Last September we became the fourth out of 147 companies inspected to achieve grade-one status, which was outstanding and put us in the top 3 per cent in the country. Following that, we achieved Beacon status.

"The Learning and Skills Beacon status is normally awarded to colleges and schools, so it's a great achievement for us to be recognized as a first-class work-based provider."
