2011 was a year that provided Journal of Service Management (JOSM) with many new ideas and directions. Owing to the journal’s name change in 2009 from International Journal of Service Industry Management to JOSM and the way that Thomson Reuters calculate and represent the impact factor, JOSM currently has two impact factors: 1.8 and 0.846, and a current manuscript acceptance rate of approximately 7 per cent. During an informal meeting with JOSM Editorial Board Members at QUIS-12, we discussed some ideas for JOSM to pursue in its leadership role in service management. Combining these suggestions with some of the thoughts shared by various members of the editorial board via telephone discussion, we have initiated a Research Direction Article series to replace book reviews. We plan to introduce two research direction articles in 2012; Javier Reynoso has agreed to lead this project for the next two years. The research direction articles will be provided by three to four well-recognized researchers in each respective area of study; they will be subject to the blind-review process, and are intended not only to highlight a nascent area of research interest, but also to provide a snapshot review of the field and suggestions for future research. More importantly, it is also anticipated that these articles will serve as a guide to young researchers and students who may be seeking research direction. In this issue, we are pleased to introduce the first of these articles, entitled “Service-driven manufacturing: provision, evolution and financial impact of services in industrial firms.” I hope you will recommend this manuscript to your PhD students and to other young researchers.
