We are pleased to bring out this special issue of Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering. This issue contains selected papers invited/presented in the Asian International Workshop on Advanced Reliability Modeling (AIWARM) which was held in Hiroshima, Japan, August 26-27, 2004. A total of 78 papers from Asian and European area were presented at the workshop. This special issue is intended to share the ideas and results from the workshop with more reliability researchers and practitioners. Extended versions of the presented papers in the workshop were solicited to be submitted for the special issue. Finally, 14 papers were selected, seven of them published in Volume 11 Issue 3 in 2005 and the second batch of seven are scheduled in this issue.

The papers in this special issue cover several important research topics. The topics included are: redundancy optimization using genetic algorithms; acceptance sampling based on failure-censored data; fault tree analysis; reliability design of industrial plants; performance evaluation and software reliability modeling. The papers are expected to steer further research in maintenance and reliability modeling and optimization.

We are very grateful for the reviewers and also thank all participants to the special issue. The editors are also grateful to Professor Salih O. Duffuaa for inviting us to bring out a special issue of JQME.
