Professor Barry Cooper becomes Vice President of ACCA

Article Type: Announcements From: Managerial Auditing Journal, Volume 26, Issue 2

Managerial Auditing Journal (MAJ) Editor Barry Cooper has been elected as Vice President of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the largest global professional accounting body in the world. The ACCA currently has 140,000 members, 405,000 students, 82 offices and members in 170 countries. After one year as Vice President, he will move on to Deputy President and in his third year take on the role as President of the association.

“This is a great honour, not just because of the size and influence of the organisation but the fact that this is only the second time in its 105 year history the ACCA has elected a presidential candidate from outside the UK/Ireland and also, to my knowledge, the first time a professor has been elected to the position,” said Barry Cooper.

Barry Cooper is Professor of Accounting and currently Head of the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance in the Faculty of Business Law at Deakin University, Melbourne. He has a Bachelor of Commerce, Master of Education and PhD degree and is a Fellow of ACCA. He chairs ACCA’s Research and Finance Committees and sits on number of other committees. Professor Barry Cooper has previously been Head of the Accountancy Departments at the Hong Kong Polytechnic (1987-1991) and The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (1993-1997). He was also National Director – Member Services of CPA Australia (1998-2000), when he was responsible for its member services and professional development operations throughout Australia and Asia.

Barry Cooper has been Editor of MAJ since 2005, and with Co-Editor Philomena Leung has overseen a dramatic rise in article downloads of over 300 per cent and a considerable rise in research excellence represented in its articles. He is also a former President of the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand, and has contributed to Emerald’s ongoing success in the last five years in many ways. Our sincere congratulations go to Barry Cooper for all the excellent work he has done to achieve this accolade, both for the journal and the ACCA.
